My goal with the series β€œ*Yawn*” was to create a series of staged portraits of people yawning in situations where they should not be yawning. I wanted to create photographs that have some effect or physical impact on the viewer, but also have this humorous aspect to them. In these staged situations, the subject would be pretending to yawn at first, but sometimes this pretending turned into a natural yawn – in this way, there is still something somewhat candid about the images.

To come up with potential situations where the main subject should not be yawning, I thought of times when I would be concerned if I were to see someone falling asleep. I imagined my roommate, an avid rock climber, falling asleep right as she reached the top of the wall; someone yawning while pouring coffee and totally missing the cup; a tattoo artist mid-yawn as he’s mid-tattoo; or in a more intimate setting.
